Agenda

Enjoy a morning paddle on the serene Seventh Lake, where you can explore interesting bays, catch the sunrise, and experience calm waters. The forecast promises no wind and no rain, making it an ideal day for kayaking.

Destination

Your journey begins at the public boat launch on Seventh Lake, located on Route 28 east of Inlet, NY.

Capturing the Beauty of Seventh Lake

Before heading out, check the sunrise time using the weather channel or your smartphone. Plan your trip by considering your driving time, the time it will take to unload your kayak, and how long it will take to load your gear onto the boat. This preparation ensures a smooth start to your adventure.

30 Minutes to Be “In the Moment”

To fully appreciate the beauty of the morning, allow an extra 30 minutes to immerse yourself in the experience. Paddle slowly, taking in the tranquility of the lake as you listen to the subtle sounds of lake trout swimming beneath the surface. Keep an eye out for wildlife awakening to greet the day.

This moment on Seventh Lake could be the highlight of your day, offering a peaceful and refreshing escape into nature. Enjoy the serenity and make the most of your time on the water.

Look for interesting photos among the many smaller objects along the shoreline or bays.

As you paddle, keep listening for the sounds of lake trout swimming by and remain alert for other fish species that may be lurking beneath the surface. Calculate the sun’s expected rise and position yourself so that it’s at your back for optimal photography opportunities—except for those stunning sunrise shots, of course.

Take a moment to appreciate the delicate silver spider webs heavy with dew, glistening in the morning light. Notice the damp, mossy spruce trees, their dark grey bark glistening with moisture. Observe how the sun’s rays filter through the forest, creating a beautiful interplay of light and shadow that adds to the serene ambiance of the lake.

Adirondack Photography: Immersing in Nature’s Details

Don’t forget to pack a package of crackers in your gear. You might encounter some curious young ducklings eager to become your guides. These close-up shots can be priceless! The little ones will practically hop into your boat for a nibble, creating unforgettable moments that are perfect for photography.

I always carry two camera bodies ready to shoot: one equipped with a large zoom lens and the other with a wide-angle lens. Today, I’m excited to explore the unique flora and fauna that thrive in the lakes of the Adirondacks. Each excursion presents an opportunity to enhance my photography skills by focusing on different subjects.

The interplay of sunlight and mist often complicates my camera settings on every trip, adding an extra layer of challenge. Each paddle becomes not just an adventure on the water but also a valuable learning experience. Whether capturing the intricate details of a dew-covered leaf or the expansive beauty of the landscape, I embrace the unpredictability of nature and the creative process it inspires.

Reflections of the Enchanting Mist on the Seventh Lake

The mist dripping off a broken tree begs you to catch the drips in mid-air…the reflections in an abandoned cabin window are eye-catching. Position your kayak for three different perspectives and let the sun be your guide. Before you realize it, fifteen minutes have passed while you are free of stress and concentrating on your new hobby.

Move slowly as you navigate through the bay, where artfully designed tree stumps reflect beautifully in the calm water. The natural designs are truly unmatched, showcasing a creativity that surpasses our imagination. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a gleaming dragonfly resting on one of the stumps, perfectly positioned to catch the light of the rising sun.

Perfecting the Shot with Background Considerations

Pay close attention to the backgrounds of your shots. Make sure to avoid unsightly tarps or floating debris that could detract from the beauty of your images. Take your time to paddle around each unique piece of wooden art to find the ideal angle for your photos.

Adjust your exposure compensation to slightly darken the subject, adding a touch of drama to the composition. Rest your paddle to eliminate any ripples in the water, ensuring a smooth surface for reflection.

Now, shoot! Capture as many angles as you can, then continue your journey around the bend to discover what else awaits.

Eco-systems appear on half-submerged trees that can include a multitude of critters. Drift closely to shore and sit. Observe. Shoot with the sun glowing on the wet moss and illuminating the webs woven all around it. Look for minuscule flowers and buds. Try that shot in the peacefulness of the still water of seventh lake NY. Try it as a silhouette.

Another 30 minutes have passed. In this serene moment, you find yourself alone in the still water, fully immersed in the quiet surroundings. The reality of thousands of visitors descending the mountains for vacation fades from your mind. Instead, you focus on creating and absorbing the beauty around you. This experience becomes a form of therapeutic recreation—just you, your camera, nature, the lakes, and the peace that envelops you.

The Morning of Fulfillment at Seventh Lake

Can you envision a more fulfilling way to spend your morning than engaging in photography and exploring the natural beauty at Seventh Lake? For many, this is the ultimate escape. The tranquility of the Adirondacks offers a unique opportunity to capture breathtaking images while connecting with nature on a deeper level.

You will never regret the time spent photographing the stunning landscapes and wildlife that define this region. Each click of the shutter serves as a reminder of the beauty you’ve witnessed and the memories you’re creating.
